Hasbro’s Ally Simpson on bringing publishing phenomenon Fourth Wing into board games

Ally, it’s great to connect. Hasbro is launching a series of games based on Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling Fourth Wing book series – starting with a Fourth Wing edition of Priorities. Before we dive into that, why do you feel Fourth Wing has resonated with fans?
I think Fourth Wing has resonated with fans because it offers a captivating blend of fantasy, romance and high-stakes adventure. The characters are compelling, the world-building is immersive and the emotional stakes are incredibly high. And let’s be honest, Xaden Riorson takes home the – chocolate – cake.

Now, I confess I haven’t read the books yet, so that reference is lost on me… But my other half has and she enthusasitically agrees with you! So what about the books suit the world of board games?
It translates perfectly to the world of board games because the series is all about choices, relationships and navigating a complex world. These elements lend themselves perfectly to games that encourage discussion, debate and strategic decision-making. Plus, the passionate fandom is a force to be reckoned with. We wanted to give them a fun and authentic experience they can enjoy together.

I sense you yourself are a fan?
Absolutely, I’m a huge fan- just ask everyone in the Hasbro office! Our office is filled with BookTok girlies, and Fourth Wing has been a hot topic since the release of Onyx Storm.

Does being a fan matter when it comes to how you approach licensed game design?
Definitely. It allows us to approach the project with a deep understanding and appreciation for the source material. It ensures that we’re creating a product that is authentic, respectful and true to the spirit of the series. This is a game created by fans for fans, and we hope Fourth Wing fans can see that!

The first game to come out of this partnership is the Fourth Wing edition of Priorities. For anyone new to the game, how will this version play?
Priorities Fourth Wing Edition is all about ranking five things from the world of Fourth Wing from love to loathe. One person takes the role of the Wingleader and secretly ranks their cards. Then, the rest of the Squad works together to guess that order. For every ranking they get right, they collect that card and get a letter to spell PRIORITIES. It’s the Squad vs the Game – spell PRIORITIES before the game does to win!

I understand author Rebecca Yarros was involved in development. Can you speak to how she and the Hasbro design team worked together?
Rebecca Yarros was an integral part of the development process. She and her team worked closely with us to ensure that the game was authentic and true to the spirit of the series. From content approvals to art direction, her input was invaluable in creating a product that would resonate with Fourth Wing fans.

And there’s more Fourth Wing games on the way from Hasbro?
Yes – and while I can’t reveal any details just yet, I can assure you that we’re dedicated to this collaboration with Rebecca Yarros. Our goal is to develop a diverse collection of products that will immerse fans even deeper into the captivating world of Fourth Wing. Keep an eye out for upcoming announcements – we have some exciting things in store!

Terrific. One last question – what other Hasbro titles are you excited to see land soon?
There’s so many incredible options to choose from! But if I had to pick, I’d say the new releases of Monopoly App Banking, Connect 4 Frenzy, and Rebounce top the list!
