Mattel’s Ted Wu on developing a Hot Wheels milestone in the Speed Snap Track System

Ted, for anyone new to the Speed Snap Track System, what does bring to Hot Wheels?
The Speed Snap Track System is a milestone for Hot Wheels. For virtually the entire history of the brand, we’ve not changed the Hot Wheels track system… However, in the spirit of constantly driving innovation and listen to our consumers, we knew there was an opportunity to improve our Hot Wheels track system.

Kids want to feel in-control and be able to easily build with their tracks. Parents want to spend less time assembling toys and be able to store things easier. This new system does exactly that! It simplifies track building with an intuitive snap-together design that lets kids create bigger, more imaginative layouts on their own. It keeps the excitement of racing and stunting alive while making set-up and storage easier for families.

And as you say, this is the first time the track system’s been altered in the brand’s history… What sparked the revamp?
This innovation began by listening to our consumers. We learned that younger builders often needed help with assembly, and parents wanted a smoother set-up experience. Speed Snap was designed to empower kids to build independently and to make play more seamless for everyone involved.

The track is an iconic part of Hot Wheels and, I imagine, not to be tampered with lightly… How important is it to ‘interrogate’ aspects of your brands that perhaps feel untouchable?
Hot Wheels has a deep legacy, but progress requires curiosity. We approach every evolution with respect for what fans love most, while being bold enough to reimagine it for today’s generation. Innovation keeps the brand’s spirit alive and its future bright.

Development-wise, were there any tough nuts you were pleased to crack?
Getting the ‘snap’ just right was a major achievement. We wanted a connection that felt satisfying, held up to the power of Hot Wheels cars and was easy for kids to use. Balancing durability, ease and that signature Hot Wheels feel took time – but the result was worth it.

Amazing! Does this new system open opportunities elsewhere for Hot Wheels?
Absolutely. Speed Snap creates new possibilities for track design, product innovation and digital integration. The Track Creator app is just the beginning, inspiring kids to dream up builds that blend physical and digital play in new and exciting ways.
